Air Conditioning › Operation Test

How to test Car Air Conditioning :

One of the easiest things to do when it comes to your car air conditioning maintenance is testing operating temperature. All you need is a Cooking Thermometer found at just about any local grocery store and a few minutes of time.

  1. Take note of the temperature reading on the cooing thermometer - Outside Temp Reading
  2. Place the Cooking Thermometer in the CENTER dash vent.
  3. Set the Air Conditioning to MAX and turn it on
  4. Run the engine till it reaches normal operating temperature. Usually takes about 10 minutes.
  5. Take note of the Cooking Thermometer - Max Cooling Temp Reading.

Subtract the the Max Cooling Reading from the Outside Temp Reading. There should be at a minimum of a 20 degree difference. Ex. if it is 80 degrees outside the Max Cooling Temp should read at least 60 degrees. If the engine is run at 1500 rpm you should see the Max Cooling Reading come close to 40 degrees or lower. This is what a Properly functioning Air Conditioning System should do.
